TUGU PAHLAWAN

 
There are two opinions about who became the initiator, as well as the architect of the monument located in  Pahlawan Surabaya Street. According to Gatot Barnowo, this monument was initiated by Doel Arnowo, who was then the Head of Surabaya's Big City. Then he asked Ir. Tan to design the image of the monument in question, to be subsequently presented to President Soekarno.Meanwhile, according to Ir. Soendjasmono, the initiator of this monument is Ir. Soekarno himself. This idea received special attention from the Mayor of Surabaya, Doel Arnowo. For the planning and the picture submitted to Ir. R. Soeratmoko, who has defeated several other architectures in the competition for the selection of architects to build this monument.In the beginning the construction work of Tugu Pahlawan Monument was handled by Surabaya City Hall itself. Then proceeded by Indonesian Engineering Corporation, which was then forwarded by Saroja Contractor. The monument, built for ten months, was inaugurated by President Soekarno on 10 November 1952
